In Keswick yesterday, as we wanted to visit the Derwent Pencil Museum – and it is quite fascinating and well worth a look. But earlier we walked round Crosthwaite church, burial place of the Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley, founder of the National Trust, defender of Lakeland Footpaths and champion of the Right to Roam. And of course, the poet Robert Southey (author of The Three Bears too, albeit without Goldilocks) is buried in the churchyard.

You can read more about Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley you can read about his Lakeland campaigns in my book “The Compleat Trespasser.”

    1. One of the most interesting churches in Cumbria, and I don’t think we’ve found everything yet. And such a peaceful retreat from the crowds.

  1. What a beautiful church, and what a beautiful setting! I love the medieval glass, especially as there’s so few examples left in churches. Well done for photographing the stained glass so well too – this is something I’ve never been able to get right. There was one church near Tingewick where we used to live that had an amazing fully in-tact medieval window dating from around 1235, when Henry III gifted it to the Manor of Chetwode. But I’ve never managed to get a decent shot of it to do a post about it!

Fascinating image of the green man on the font too, something else I don’t think I’ve seen before. Glad you enjoyed the pencil museum.

  2. Thank you – yes the glass is wonderful, even the Victorian glass is splendid. It’s amazing how much history can be found in a single building. And, yes, the pencil museum is fascinating – particularly the story of how they made pencils hiding a map and compass for bomber crews and PoW’s in the war, to aid escapes! Cheers JB
